Sale Creek is what people mean when they say small town. The community never incorporated and never needed to: farms and ridge land on the west side of US-27, lake coves on the east, and a name that goes back to 1779. The story goes that goods and livestock taken in the Chickamauga campaign were auctioned beside the creek, and the name stuck for two and a half centuries.
It draws people who want acreage, quiet, and water in the same address without leaving a real commute behind. Chattanooga is about half an hour down the four-lane, Dayton ten minutes up it, and in between the pace drops to porch speed. Kids grow up with the same classmates from kindergarten through graduation at the community's own small school campuses. The kind of continuity most places lost a generation ago.
