The county

Roane County

Watts Bar's north-end county, where three rivers meet.

Kingston, Harriman, and Rockwood ring the upper end of Watts Bar Lake, where the Clinch and Emory rivers join the Tennessee, waterfront courthouse town included, with Oak Ridge's science corridor on the county's east edge.

The lay of the land

What it’s like here.

Roane holds the top of Watts Bar, and it shows: Kingston's courthouse sits a block off the water, lake neighborhoods string along the Clinch and Emory arms, and I-40 runs the county east–west so Knoxville is a straightforward commute.

The east side leans technical; part of Oak Ridge and its research-and-industry corridor reaches into Roane, which gives the county a jobs base unusual for lake country. Water plus payroll is the Roane pitch.

On the water

  • Three-river junction

The Clinch and Emory meet the Tennessee inside the county: creek-arm coves, river current, and main-lake water in one map square.

  • Kingston's waterfront

The county seat fronts the lake with city parks and ramps, courthouse-town errands with a water view.

  • Upper Watts Bar coves

The lake's north-end shoreline carries established dock neighborhoods on both the main channel and the river arms.

Worth knowing

  • The places

Kingston on the water, Harriman on the Emory, Rockwood under the plateau wall, plus Roane's share of Oak Ridge to the northeast.

  • The Oak Ridge corridor

National-lab and advanced-manufacturing employment sits partly inside the county line, a short drive from the coves.

  • I-40 access

Interstate interchanges at Kingston, Midtown, and Harriman put Knoxville about forty minutes east.
